WHAT
IS CONCORDIA?
Seymour’s “Best-Kept” Secret!
Concordia is private social club located on Meadow Street in
Seymour, CT. It was established in 1882 as Concordia Singing
Society, a social club, fraternal organization and competitive
choral singing group for German-Americans.
Since that time the membership has been expanded to include all
Americans and we want to take this opportunity to let you know a
little bit about Concordia.
Concordia History
On November 7, 1882 the first meeting
of Concordia Singing Society took place in the tailor shop of Mr.
John A. Popp. Mr. Popp was known throughout the state of
Connecticut as one of the finest tailors of his day. Almost all of
Mr. Popp’s employees were of German descent, many of them
first-generation Americans. It was Mr. Popp’s dream to bring a bit
of “home” to town for his employees, and so he founded the Concordia
Singing Society, a competitive choral group and fraternal
organization. Many years have passed since then and Concordia has
been along for the ride, residing in at least three different
locations in Seymour since 1882.
The Concordia is located now at 2 Meadow Street in a
building that was constructed in 1914. The building was designed by
another Seymour resident, Mr. Charles Kempf. Its construction was
made possible by the generous donations of the members of that
time. The membership and the building have undergone many hardships
and changes over the years, but Concordia has always found a way to
keep on. Great difficulties were brought about during World
War I, not only in a financial way, but in a social sense. Because
the founding organization was of German character, numerous
indignities were suffered. Concordia’s membership rose to the
occasion by sending off many of their own to the war effort and also
by lending use of the building to the military and to the citizens
of Seymour for the good of the community.
In 1918, there was a nationwide breakout of influenza
and the victims were so numerous at the time that Concordia opened
its doors and aided the ill as a temporary/satellite hospital. Some
of the volunteers and patients of that hospital perished during the
outbreak, but most survived and the community was grateful.
As the original members had planned Concordia competed
at many, many singing competitions called Sangerfests. The
wonderful musical accomplishments of members past, has been
acknowledged by many awards – still on display today in Concordia
Hall.
What
Does Concordia Offer Now?
Since about 1940, the membership of Concordia has discontinued
competetitive choral singing. It remains a place for social
gatherings and camaraderie. The main supportive business of
Concordia is as a tavern, where you can have a cocktail or a beer,
play a game of pool, just sit back and chat with friends, or watch
the game. A Meeting Hall is available for rental for private
functions. We also have a .22 Caliber Range in the lower level for
the use of our Members and their Guests.
